Scrotum Surgery
Scrotal surgery refers to surgical procedures performed on the scrotum — the pouch of skin that contains and protects the testicles. These procedures may be done for medical, cosmetic, or reconstructive reasons.
If you’re experiencing pain or some other symptoms in your testicles or scrotum, talk to a urologist. An accurate diagnosis is the first step toward an effective treatment.
Common reasons for scrotal surgery
- Epididymitis (inflammation of the testicles caused by chlamydia)
- Hydrocele (swelling of the scrotum)
- Orchitis (inflammation of the testicle)
- Spermatocele (fluid in the testicle)
- Testicular torsion (when the spermatic cord, which brings blood to the scrotum, twists)
- Varicocele (enlarged veins in the testicle)
- Scrotal abscess or infection
- Trauma or injury
- Skin lesions or masses
- Scrotal reconstruction
Types of procedures
- Hydrocelectomy Removal of fluid and repair of the sac surrounding the testicle.
- Varicocelectomy Repair of enlarged veins to relieve pain or improve fertility.
- Cyst or mass removal Excision of benign growths or suspicious lumps.
- Scrotoplasty Surgical reshaping or reconstruction of the scrotum (sometimes cosmetic or gender-affirming).
What to expect
Scrotal surgery is usually performed under either local or general anesthesia, depending on the specific procedure and patient needs. It is often done on an outpatient basis, allowing patients to go home the same day. The length of the procedure varies depending on the complexity of the condition being treated.
